66 year ago Britishers left Sri Lanka "free". Unlike today" a colonizer and invaders they left the physical infrastructure developed by them "free". May be they didn't have wish or will to destroy the structure or may even be their motive to gain super normal return on investment and saving incremental dismantling costs.
However, with the departure of the British colonizers, the unified administration system eroded if that was exists at all, and they planted the seeds for ethnic based crisis within the emerging governing system. This became very easy for them as we are divided with historical narratives of Dutugemunu legacy and Elara (Ellaalan) legacy.
In nutshell, what we got in the name of freedom and independence 66 years ago was simply farewell party to British colonizers and falling in to an internal disaster with which we are loving till to date.
Unfortunately the struggle of T.B. Jayah in front of British colonizers to depart them and tackle the internal problem internally was remain unaccomplished mission yet.
We need post-colonial Ja'yahs' to drive the internal struggle and carry forward the reconciliation process internally and set a best form of governance that take care of all citizens justly and fairly.
Freedom without proper knowledge, precise direction and consciousness is a disaster.
Today what we celebrate as independent day is nothing but our own failure to set a vision for the country and governing system that put human being first and the rest second.
Today we need citizens like T.B. Ja'yah to take the task in to their hands and free the Sri Lankans form their own lacking and blindness and set an alternate governing system that take care of citizens putting human first and their identities next.
